Things I wish someone had told me before I quit my day job-Part 1 ...GBP Creative Photography and Video

WARNING: This is about to get super nerdy...

As we mentioned the other week, we've decided to start a new section of our blog where we share some of the knowledge and tips we've learned over the past few years, now that we are full time photographers/ videographers.

It's an attempt to help share knowlege with fellow photogs/videographers, in hopes that you don't have to learn the hard, and often expensive way of trial and error... Not that that's what we did... *cough cough*

Now, we're not saying that there aren't better solutions and products out there, but we're not product testers… We don't get stuff for free, so everything here we have learned, first by researching online (obsessively) until we figured we knew what we needed to know, then spending some hard earned (or borrowed) money. This is all stuff we wish someone had told us when we started in this business years ago...

Part One: Batteries are lame.

AA Batteries are a the WORST...AND it turns out they run pretty much everything we (ie. photo/video people) use from the Zoom H4n, to pocket wizards, to of course the biggie… our speedlights.

Ok you're right, it could be worse...we could have like 5 different kinds of batteries to use instead of just the standard AA’s. BUT the problem comes when you're shooting almost every day, but you're going broke trying to keep up with replacing these Double A demons….

Because if you think about it, even if you're shooting with only 2 flashes, both with battery packs, and say you get a whole week out of those batteries (not likely), thats 12 AA’s per flash x2...so 24AA’s a week, 96 a month, or over 1000 batteries a year!! In other words, you quickly could become a planet killing, douche ”B”! (A broke one too)

Now, say you forget to buy some extras, because you thought you had enough to last this job… but you end up shooting way more than you thought and you run out of batteries...

When someone is paying you to shoot something there is no way in hell you can risk having a dead battery stall, or even worse shut down your shoot. Can you imaging having to ask the client … “um hey man, um do you have any double A’s kicking around that I could borrow?” … NO, just NO.

So, you need yourself some rechargeables and a metric shit ton of em' too. So here's the ditty on rechargeable batteries that pertains to us:

The most common types of batteries today are NiMH and Lithium Ion.  Lithium Ion is the same type of battery that is in your cameras, cell phone, tablet, laptop etc. The reason for this is: they're lightweight, hold a mean charge,  have built-in temperature control stuff, and no longer have the need to completely run dry before you re-charge them.

The down side is that they are still relatively new (especially in the AA’s market) which makes them super expensive, and not easy to find. No doubt eventually we'll be rocking these little gems in all our gear but not yet my friends...

So, that takes us to NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride). These guys have two types: Low self discharge (LSD), and the regular joes (lets call them RJ’s). The difference is kinda in the name.. the RJ’s will drain themselves as they sit there being unused in your gear which sucks if you like to have your batteries charged and ready to go (which you should) incase you get a last minute job call. The LSD’s, on the other hand, will still drain but instead of a couple months they will take like a year to drain anything significant.

The only disadvantage of the LSD’s over the RJ’s is that the RJ’s will generally have a higher power output (that’s the mAh rating).  But realistically,  you have to be in a lab, bench testing this stuff to notice anything, and in my opinion, the advantage of the LSD’s outweigh any tiny amount of power difference from the RJ’s.

Part two: Chargers have feelings too

I thought a charger is a charger and that's that…nope! It turns out there are 2 types of AA battery chargers: a Smart one and a regular one. If you have a regular charger like I did, (Like a Duracell 4 battery charger I found at Walmart for my Duracell RJ’s, pictured right) it turns out, it only charges the batteries in a group, not as individuals.  In other words, it pumps the same amount of energy into each battery, regardless of their current charge, for a predetermined amount of time.  So when it says the batteries are "full" it might mean 1 is full, it might mean all 4 are full...you have no way of knowing. Not to mention it can also damage your batteries during this process, which reduces the capacity for their life cycle.

SO, now you jam those AA’s into your speedlight and start shooting away, but your speed light only see’s the batteries in groups as well,  so when 1 battery drops below a certain point, (because it's the one that wasn't fully charged) it assumes they're all dead… So you're left not being able to figure out why you're getting crap battery life out of these damn rechargeables...

Now, the smart charger (SM), on the other hand, charges each battery separately and knows when to stop charging each individual one.  This ensures ALL of your AA’s will be fully charged every time. The batteries then also get less damage every time, increasing their life cycle...Good for your wallet, AND the environment.

SO, moral of the story? Quit pooping on the planet and buy some NiMH recharagbles which can be either LSD or RJ’s (up to you) but for love of GAD buy yourself a decent charger or you're not getting the most out of the rechargeable batteries you do have.

Old Cabin...by GBP Creative Photography and VIdeo

Before heading out onto his most recent tour, our buddy Jona Barr of Old Cabin came over to the GBP studio to get some new photos done for his Press Kit...

We were stoked with the results...and if you're looking for some awesome new music and haven't already, go grab his album...it's wicked!

Yukon Beer Shoot? Yes please... GBP Creative Photography and Video

So if you know either of us, it will come as no surprise to you that there are a few things in life that we love and never want to go without:

1. Coffee.  This is the actual fuel that keeps us moving, and it's dark, delicious aroma wakes us up every single morning

2. Photography.  Sharp cheddar warning: We love what we do guys. Like we seriously stop every few months and think to ourselves: "Wholly crap, we actually are getting to do this for a living!"  Then we high five it out and get back to work.

3. Beer.  Good beer.  Heck, it's one of the reasons that Gary moved up to the Yukon in the first place-he saw a sweet little Northern city that had good coffee, a good cultural scene and an amazing local brewery...what more could you want!?

Needless to say, when one of our favourite local businesses,Yukon Brewing, asked us to do some commercial work for them we were ALL IN.

So although they're killin' it here in the Yukon, Yukon Brewing has also spread out to other places in Canada over the years, and they were looking to do a specific ad for a wine festival happening in Alberta this fall.

A beer ad in a wine festival publication?  OH YEAH...you'll see why below.

So, the marketing team came to us with a pretty nailed down concept already, and we had to make the execution happen.  Luckily we had a great team together, and were able to find a perfect little 'bar' spot to set up shop for the afternoon to get a series ready for them to choose from.

Below is the final image, followed by the fully designed edition which hit the wine festival this fall...

Because it's true, Man simply cannot live on wine alone...

Headshot station...GBP Creative Photography and Video

Lookin' good, and feelin' great...That's what a head shot should make people think of...and we think our latest client fits that description perfectly.

Headshots are a great way to show off your personality and professionalism-and with all of the use of web content and social media these days, having a good quality photo (or even video as we're starting to do for some clients), can go a long way...

If you're interested in the benefits of head shots and getting some new images for your business give us a shout!

Family portraits-GBP Creative Photography and Video

You know what's rad? When a single conversation can immediately transport you back in time to when you were a kid.

This is what happened to me (Bri) recently at one of our shoots....

It's always sweet to get to know our different clients and find out what they're into and how they spend their time...and it was as we were doing that during this particular shoot,  that I found out just how much I had in common with a 2nd grader...

"What oh what could you possibly have in common!?" you ask? One word: Playmobil.

That's right...we spent a solid 30 minutes at least listing off what collections we have, where we got them, and which were our favorites...I think the parents and Gary were talking about something else at some point, but neither of us noticed because we were busy in deep conversation...he has the PIRATE SHIP PEOPLE!!!

But maybe i've digressed...photos anyone??

Conrad Portrait Session-GBP Creative Photography and Video

Alright, as promised, we have session two of our portraits with Megan Jensen to share with you today, and we are super stoked to see what you guys think!

So this portrait session was particularly special to Megan and her family, and we were SO honoured to have been able to do this for her....we won't bore you with the story of how it took us THREE attempts of driving out to Carcross to make it happen! (hints: road construction, then crazy rain storm, then third time was a charm!)

But the reason it was so important for us to get out to an area known as Conrad, just past Carcross is because it has such significance to Megan and her family.  On the way out there, Megan told us the entire story of how she was actually the first in her family in over 90 years to take part in a traditional coming of age ceremony where she stayed out at Conrad alone in her own camp for five days, receiving visits from various women in her family and community.  It was absolutely fascinating learning about all of the teachings she received while she was out there, and to see her go through the emotions of returning to that spot and sharing her stories with us.

We learned more in that one afternoon with Megan than we have from reading many-a-books! She has an incredible gift of sharing her family's traditions and knowledge, and so when we got to Conrad to do the shoot and we had Megan do her traditional drumming on the shore, it was an incredibly powerful experience.

Speaking of her drumming, I woke up the next morning singing her songs...they were stuck in my head for days! I unfortunately didn't sound nearly as good as she did...

So we wanted to share these images and send along another huge congratulations to Megan and her family for her recent graduation and thank you guys for having us be a part of such an incredibly special time in your lives.

It was truly an honour.

Prom Dress Portraits-GBP Creative Photography and Video

So this is the time of year when hundreds of Yukon grade 12 students are getting ready to finish up their high school career and jump out into the world on a variety of adventures, whether that's through more school, working, or travelling...

But first, there is graduation. And there is prom.  Time to celebrate all of the hard work that went into getting them to where they are at...We'd like to say we remember exactly how that feels, but we're trying not to think about the fact it's been a while since we were both in their shoes....Like we don't even want to do the math...

BUT that's not the point! The point is to celebrate all of these young adults that are about to embark on the next phase of their lives...and we got to work with one exceptional young lady that fits into this category recently as her mom gave her some portrait sessions with us as a grad gift.

So this is part one of that series...the "Lookin' like a hollywood bombshell" half!

For this shoot, we really wanted to focus in on the glamour of her dress, hair, makeup and energy, so we decided to go with a nice, simple studio environment with a bit darker of a backdrop to contrast with the tones of her dress.

We could not have asked for a better model...you looked stunning Megan!

Maternity Portraits-GBP Creative Photography and Video

Baby madness!!

Anyone else notice there's a lot of new families starting here in the Yukon? Because we sure have...

We've been getting a ton of requests for maternity portrait sessions lately, which are always fun to shoot-especially when it's for the couple's first child...

We don't have any kids, unless you count our 'fur child' Bill Murray (he's a newfoundlander with an attitude), but we feel like we have learned a ton about what to expect if we ever do from our clients...they are always happy to share their nervous laughter when they are navigating through what to expect with their first child, and then the tales of both the highs and lows of the parenting process once they've met the new family member.

It's one of the best parts of these jobs, getting to know how each family works together...

These particular soon-to-be parents were top notch.  Great sense of humours, super easy to work with, and just so happened to have epic natural light in their home (Huge win for GBP!)

We'll be getting to meet their newest addition in just a few weeks too!

Destination Weddings-GBP Creative Photography and Video

Well, tis the season...weddings 2013 have begun!

In the past we've done a lot of wedding work, however, we actually aren't doing as many of them this year as we are starting to get too busy with other commercial and corporate jobs.

This being said,  we did get to start our summer season with a great one that took us all the way to sunny Mexico, which considering it was snowing here the day before we left, wasn't something we were mad about!

We firmly believe that weddings can be one of the hardest gigs for a photographer...they are long days, high stress and require you to be 'on' 100% both artistically and technically that entire time.  But oddly enough, people don't seem to have much sympathy for all that when the beach, cold beer, and ocean waves are involved...

This recent wedding was a great one to start the season with though.  Everyone there was ready to have an incredible time, and we've gotta say the bride and groom were two of our most relaxed ones yet! Apparently sun and cold drinks will do that to ya...Thanks Robyn and Darrell for starting off our summer season right!
